Scope of Work
Wetland Lead Contamination Survey
Result
BBJ Group swiftly and efficiently characterized lead contamination across an 80-acre wetland area, delivering high-quality results to inform wildlife management and potential remediation efforts.
Project Overview
BBJ Group completed a lead contamination survey for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina in February 2024 (Contract GS10F0471X 140FS324F0006). The project aimed to investigate concerns about high swan mortality rates. BBJ Group conducted an extensive field investigation, advancing over 800 soil borings and collecting more than 1,600 soil and sediment samples in challenging wetland conditions. Using x-ray fluorescence screening and laboratory analysis, BBJ Group accurately characterized lead contamination levels across the 80-acre study area. BBJ Group's field methods and data analysis techniques allowed for the completion of the project ahead of schedule and provided the client with high-quality, statistically robust results. The final Site Assessment Report included GIS deliverables and plan view figures depicting areas exceeding background levels and ecological screening values. This assessment provided the client with crucial information to guide future management decisions and potential remediation efforts at the refuge.
