EXPERIENCE

Mr. Nielsen is a Principal with BBJ Group’s site remediation practice, which provides site investigation and remediation services.  He has over 30 years of environmental engineering experience, including managing site assessment/remediation projects, with particular emphasis on applying risk assessment and risk management strategies to site remediation, sediment remediation, and landfill closure projects.  Projects have addressed requirements under RCRA, Superfund, TSCA, and state cleanup programs in the U.S. and international requirements for projects in Argentina, Brazil, and Israel.  Mr. Nielsen has provided technical support for litigation matters involving cost recovery, cost allocation and natural resource damage assessments for contamination resulting from past manufacturing operations, leaking underground storage tanks, and past chemical handling and waste disposal practices. Mr. Nielsen also served as a program manager for the U.S. Navy remedy optimization program, which included peer review of remediation technologies, remedy performance metrics, and risk management objectives.  

Mr. Nielsen has been a contributing author to technical guidance published by the Interstate Technical and Regulatory Council, including the Property Revitalization—Lessons Learned from BRAC and Brownfields, Project Risk Management for Site Remediation, and the Contaminated Sediments Remediation guidance documents, and a contributing author for ASTM standards for the evaluation of NAPL in sediments.
